build your resume

build your resume

your resume is boring and that's why nobody calls

imagine you're a hiring manager. you have a stack of 1000 resumes on your desk. they all look the same. same format, same buzzwords, same "results-driven professional with 5+ years of experience." your eyes glaze over by resume number three.

now imagine one resume in that pile is completely different. it grabs you. it's memorable. you physically set it aside. that's the resume you need to build.

what makes a resume forgettable

  • generic objective statements nobody reads
  • listing responsibilities instead of results
  • using the same template everyone downloaded from the same website
  • burying the most impressive stuff three pages deep
  • zero personality

how to stand out in a stack of 1000

lead with impact, not duties. "managed a team of 12" says nothing. "grew revenue 340% in 18 months by rebuilding and leading a 12-person team" says everything.

quantify everything. numbers are eye magnets. percentages, dollar amounts, time saved, users served. if you can measure it, include it.

design matters. you don't need to be a graphic designer, but your resume should look clean, modern, and distinctly yours. white space is your friend. a subtle color accent makes you memorable.

add a human element. a brief section about interests, a personal motto, or an unusual skill can be the thing that gets you an interview. people hire people, not bullet points.

one page. period. unless you're a senior executive or academic, everything should fit on one page. being concise is a skill. demonstrate it.

the real move

the best resume is one that makes the hiring manager curious enough to google you. make sure what they find — your linkedin, portfolio, or online presence — tells the same compelling story.

your resume isn't a history document. it's a marketing tool. treat it like one.

if this resonated, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
