you feel anxious. you feel angry. you feel defeated. but here's the part nobody told you: those emotions didn't come from what happened. they came from the story your brain told you about what happened. cognitive behavioral therapy is the manual for rewriting those stories.

the 3 C's

CBT boils down to a deceptively simple process:

catch the thought. when you feel a negative emotion, trace it back to the thought that triggered it. "my boss didn't reply to my email" becomes "my boss thinks my work is terrible" — that second part is the thought, not the event.

check the thought. is it actually true? what evidence supports it? what evidence contradicts it? is there a more realistic interpretation? your boss probably hasn't opened the email yet. that's not the same as thinking your work is bad.

change the thought. replace the distorted thought with something more accurate. not positive — accurate. "my boss hasn't replied yet, which could mean many things" is more useful than either catastrophizing or toxic positivity.

why your default thoughts are broken

your brain developed its thought patterns during childhood, when you had limited data and limited coping skills. the 8-year-old who decided "people leave" because a friend moved away is still running the software in your adult brain that panics when someone doesn't text back.

these patterns were adaptive once. they're not anymore. CBT gives you the tools to update the software.

it works — the data is clear

CBT is one of the most researched therapeutic approaches in existence. it's been proven effective for anxiety, depression, PTSD, insomnia, and dozens of other conditions. you don't need a therapist to start (though one helps). you just need the 3 C's and a willingness to question your own thoughts.

the next time you feel a strong negative emotion, stop. catch the thought behind it. check whether it's accurate. change it to something more realistic. three steps. do this ten times and you'll never experience your emotions the same way again.
