reality distortion field

steve jobs convinced engineers that impossible deadlines were possible. elon musk convinced the world that rockets could land themselves. your friend convinced you to go out on a tuesday when you had work at 7 AM. what do these people have in common?
the art of making people believe
a reality distortion field isn't about lying. it's about believing something so completely, so viscerally, that your conviction becomes contagious. when someone is 100% certain about an outcome, it shifts the energy in the room. doubt recedes. possibility expands. people start thinking "maybe" instead of "no way."
this is a skill. and like any skill, it can be developed.
the ingredients
- genuine belief: you can't fake conviction. you have to actually believe the thing you're selling, or at least believe it's worth trying. people detect insincerity instantly
- charisma: this is just enthusiasm plus presence. be fully engaged. make eye contact. speak with energy. people mirror the emotional state of the most energized person in the room
- persistence: the first "no" is never the real answer. it's a reflex. the second "no" is a test. keep going -- not with pushiness, but with creative reframing. present the idea from a different angle
- selective hyperbole: exaggerate the upside just enough to make it exciting, but not so much that you lose credibility. "this could change everything" lands differently than "this will make us a billion dollars"
why this matters
every significant thing you want requires other people. raises. investments. relationships. creative projects. your ability to make people see what you see -- to feel the possibility you feel -- is the single most leveraged skill you can develop.
the practice
this week, try to convince someone of something they initially resist. not through manipulation, but through genuine enthusiasm and creative persistence. maybe it's a restaurant choice, a project idea, or a weekend plan. small stakes, real practice.
notice what works. notice what pushes too hard. calibrate.
the line between delusion and vision is just execution.
if this resonated, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
